Editor and Publisher Melvin Bleich made the most difficult decision in his life when he decided to cease publication of The Romeo Observer after the June 24, 2015 issue.to cease publication The Observer is the latest casualty in the newspaper industry's slide, mainly due to the Internet.Bleich said the tough economic times that came after the 2008 recession caused a dramatic decline in circulation which affected advertising revenues. Also, the Internet has diminshed the number of readers, particularly younger readers, who pick up and read the paper. "I would like to thank the readers and advertisers for their loyalty over the years I have owned the Observer," said Bleich. "It has been a pleasure to be a part of this outstanding community." Bleich began operating the newspaper in May of 1959 and recently celebrated his 56th year. The Observer also publishes The Countryman weekly. That paper will also cease publication as will the Observer's website, www.romeoobserver.com |
