RCS hires two new
principals at meeting

      The Romeo Community Schools Board of Education voted to hire two new principals at their meeting, held Monday, June 15.
       James Ellis was hired as an interim assistant principal at Romeo High School. Ellis comes from the L'Anse Creuse school district, where he was the Dean of Students. He also held administrative positions in the Ecorse and Rochester districts.
       Andrea Hassee was hired as the principal of Hamilton-Parsons Elementary School. She comes from Fitzgerald Public Schools, where she has taught since 2004. Hassee replaces Robert Maedel, who will return to the classroom as a fifth grade teacher at Washington Elementary School.
       Paul Essian, who has been an assistant principal at Romeo Middle School for many years, accepted the position as principal at Hevel Elementary School. He replaces Mike Phillips, who is retiring.
       "It's exciting to be hiring new administrators for the district," said Dr. Nancy Campbell, superintendent for RCS. "People went through two rigorous interviewing sessions prior to making a hiring decision."
       Campbell said a team of parents, teachers and administrators facilitated the interviewing sessions and that they were faced with a difficult decision as to who to hire.
       "Everyone was well-qualified and great for the positions, it was just that these people rose to the top," she said.
       All of the principals were introduced at the meeting. The board also honored Campbell for her service to the district and presented her with a gift basket filled with some of her favorite things. It was Campbell's last board meeting as superintendent of RCS. Campbell thanked the board and the community for allowing her to finish the last five and a half years of her career in Romeo before retiring.
       "It has been a wonderful experience for me," she said.
       At the meeting, the board also approved the purchase of 450 Chromebooks for the 6th graders at both Romeo and Powell middle schools. The students will have the newest version of the Chromebooks and will use them through their senior year.
       Agreements were set with two of the unions whose contracts were up this year. The board and the Romeo Administrative Association and the Romeo Office Support Personnel Association unions agreed to a step freeze and no increase in salary for the one year contract.
       "It was a `status quo' contract," Campbell said.
       The board also approved the budget recommendation of cuts for over $2 million. The board will be negotiating over the summer for other contracts.
       In order to accommodate vacation schedules, the board also agreed to change the date of their July 20 meeting, which will be held on Wed., July 15 instead. The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. at the Romeo Engineering and Technology Center.
       "The board will have all information from bids for the custodial contract by that time so that is an important date," Campbell said.
       Eight companies have sent a bid for the custodial service contract being sought by Romeo Community Schools. The board previously voted to cut $500,000 from the custodial unit. The current custodial union, AFSCME Local 2416, submitted a proposal last week Wednesday, and it is now incumbent upon the administrators to respond. In the meantime, the executive director of finance and operations will be meeting with the companies that bid on the contract.
       The current contract expires at the end of August.
